Long ago, Augustine was converted to Christian faith when a still, small voice called to him, “Take and read.” When he encountered the strange new world of the Bible, the living Word commandeered his life and transformed him, as the Word continues to do today. It is always a joy to read a book and be grateful to learn something new.

O Lord, support us: Pandemic prayers https://pres-outlook.org/2021/01/o-lord-support-us-pandemic-prayers/ Wed, 06 Jan 2021 11:00:52 +0000 https://pres-outlook.org/?p=83872 In the circles I travel, there is a prayer by John Henry Newman that has a certain cult following among us. Perhaps “cult following” is not the right language to be using about a prayer, but Newman’s prayer has a status in shaping our lives and in being uttered from our lips that gives a word to our season, and enables us to lift up our lives before God — at the end of the day,

What does God have to do with us? God refuses to be without us https://pres-outlook.org/2020/04/what-does-god-have-to-do-with-us-god-refuses-to-be-without-us/ Wed, 29 Apr 2020 09:00:16 +0000 https://pres-outlook.org/?p=76885

Who is God, really? Who are we, honestly? And what does God have to do with us? Circle back: Sustained by Reformed theology during COVID-19 https://pres-outlook.org/2020/04/circle-back-sustained-by-reformed-theology-during-covid-19/ Tue, 21 Apr 2020 18:31:28 +0000 https://pres-outlook.org/?p=76712 It is a privilege to work from home. Healthcare workers, grocery store clerks, those still able to work in food service, police officers, fire fighters and sanitation workers do not have that privilege. Perhaps our first order of business and our daily prayer during all this is to remember them and those who cannot shelter-at-home. We pray that the God whose eye is on the sparrow keeps a watch on each and all of them as they labor faithfully in this time.

Dispatches from the (COVID-19) front https://pres-outlook.org/2020/03/dispatches-from-the-covid-19-front/ Tue, 24 Mar 2020 10:00:22 +0000 https://pres-outlook.org/?p=75953

Everything is the same.

I walked outside and pollen covered my car, birds were chirping and I noticed all the yardwork that needs to be done. Azaleas are blooming. Spring has sprung. It is a beautiful time of year. Not too cold and not too hot yet.

Everything has changed.

I walked from my pollen-covered car into a Saturday morning session meeting (my first ever) and 24 hours later we were holding a church service in the sanctuary void of any congregation members while everybody participated online from home.
