A poem on Genesis 2:15–17, 3:1–7 for the First Sunday in Lent (A).

The Lord God governs by the seat of his pants

In this passage, or so it seems.
He creates the man, and then
Has the idea to put him in the garden.

Why didn’t he create him in the garden in the first place, and save a step?

He commands the man that he may eat of every tree.
Oh, wait, he thinks. Maybe not.
Scratch that idea of eating from the tree
Of the knowledge of good and evil.

So why did he start out with “every,”...
